When it comes to little pieces of marketing ephemera, these clever and colorful matchbooks with pictures of real matches are second to none!

In this collector-crazy world we live in, it’s impossible to go to a flea market without coming across old sports books for sale, and they’re usually priced, usually a dollar or less. I’m always attracted to any kind of ads, I tend to focus on sports betting. However, it wasn’t until three years ago that my eyes were opened to another type of matchbook, the Feature Match.

In the United States, “Feature” was a trademark for matchboxes with broad matchsticks printed with colors and/or designs. The brand is held by the Lion Match Company of Chicago, Illinois, and really every Feature matchbook I look at has that company’s name on it.

According to my research, Feature matches were introduced in September 1930. Although I can find no real proof of my theory, I suspect that the first Feature matchbooks were overbooked. For example, this giant matchbook from GE has several patent dates printed on the back of the row of matches. The first is 1,733,258, which corresponds to a patent issued in 1929. The last patent is 1,839,846, which would have been issued in early 1932. Matchbook measures 3 ¼ by 4 ½. .

Here is another huge Giant Feature Match Book dated June 18, 1936. It promoted the fight between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling, broadcast on NBC radio and sponsored by Buick. Above the row of matches showing a man peering through a hole in the fence are the words: “Ladies and Gentlemen – VICTORY!” What he sees behind the fence is a 1936 Buick. This is a great example of a collector’s item. It attracts collectors of sports memorabilia, radio memorabilia, auto memorabilia and, of course, sports books. As you can imagine, this is more expensive than the average matchbox with features, most of which seem to be priced between $5 and $20.

As for the history of the matchbook, many people credit Philadelphia attorney Joshua Pusey with patenting the matchbook in 1892. The Diamond Match Company bought the patent rights in 1894. Growth was slow. Then, in 1902, Diamond Match Company salesman H. C. Traute received an order for 10 million matchboxes from the Pabst Brewing Company. This is considered the first major measure.

The 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s are considered the Golden Era of match covers. Billions and billions were made, and they advertised EVERYTHING. Time of the Lion Match Company and matches whose matches were perfect.

Sometime in the late 1930s or early 1940s, Feature matchboxes became smaller. This “Winning With Wendell Wilkie” is a very popular match book because in addition to the features that show regular Americans, it is a “Show” match book with a “pop-up” photo of Wilkie inside the cover. The size of the matchbook is standard.

Slightly larger (2 inches wide by 1 ½) is a Leopold Morse matchbook. It is also a match with patriotic fervor. Obviously, Leopold Morse was a congressman, but more importantly, he sold men’s clothing.

Other than that, I’ll let the matchboxes themselves explain. Obviously with Feature match the key is to find the “whole book”. While standard matchbox collectors often remove the matchbooks and display the flat matchbook, matchstick collectors want each match to be in place and in good condition. Note also that some of the sports books, such as the Manners Big Boy and the 1955 Pontiac, are not straight-sided, but have elongated sides. These are the Contour Feature matches and they are even more desirable.
